Angelo Gordon Employees Team Up with New York Cares to Revitalize Schools

AG Risk Management VP Tara Venkatesh and Investor Relations Director Rebecca Darcy turned their passion for community service into one of the firm’s most enduring annual volunteering events.

Tara Venkatesh, Risk Management, and Rebecca Darcy, Investor Relations, firmly believe that teamwork makes the dream work and mobilized their Angelo Gordon colleagues to join an annual event that helps revitalize New York City Schools.

Back in 2013, Tara thought she could increase her impact in the community and build relationships by asking her colleagues at Angelo Gordon to participate in a volunteer day event with her. She had prior experience working with New York Cares, the largest volunteer network in New York City offering thousands of volunteer opportunities with nonprofits and schools, and invited a number of colleagues to join together for one of their team events – New York Cares Day for Schools.

New York Cares Day for Schools is a day of service dedicated to improving school environments across New York City which also provides the perfect opportunity for teams like Tara’s to spend the day giving back while using their skills and collaborating in different ways.

That year, Tara and a team of 15 AG colleagues went to work at a school on Staten Island, where they painted a 100-foot mural and planted bulbs in front of the building to improve the school environment. The following year, she found a willing and capable partner in Rebecca, and together they have led and grown the firm’s participation efforts, firmly establishing New York Cares Day as a fun, creative, and impactful annual volunteering event, supported by the firm each year with financial donations.

At the most recent New York Cares Day event, Tara and Rebecca were joined by more than 50 people from Angelo Gordon’s New York office. They spent the day at P.S. 64M in the East Village, where they organized the school’s library, painted murals and cleaned out closets.

Thanks to Tara and Rebecca’s tireless and enthusiastic advocacy for this cause, twice as many volunteers from Angelo Gordon attended the event. In addition, the firm doubled its annual donation to New York Cares in recognition of its important work for New York City schools and their students.

“It’s so gratifying to see your workplace support a cause that you care about,” said Tara. “I really appreciate that Angelo Gordon recognizes that it’s important for us to do our part to make the community better.”
